Talavera
Talavera is a certain type of ceramics work that comes originally from Spain. The exact place in Spain where this kind of pottery comes, gives it the name, Talavera.
Nowadays mexican handcrafts are famous world wide and one of the most known handcrafts made in Mexico are the ones made out of ceramic. Mexican Talavera comes from Puebla and the quality of this ceramics comes from the precise work of the craftsmen with each piece. Every piece from talavera is different from the other, thats the benefit of a handmade product.
The Making of
Talavera
1. A lump of clay is transformed into a desired shape manually on a
potters wheel or with a mold and then left to dry for several days.
2. Once dried is ready for its first firing, what emerges from the kiln
is baked terra cotta or "jaguete".
3. The piece is dipped into a chalky liquid glazed, which gives it the
unique shine and color.
4. The painter painstakingly freehand decorates the piece. An understanding
of the based mineral color complexities is essential, as the colors
of the raw glazes used are different from the colors that are finally
produced.
5. Finally, the piece is fired again, at temperatures 700°-1000°
C. Brilliance and final coloration are determined by te temperature
and kiln time.
Talavera was developed in warm climates and is NOT frost/freeze proof. Talavera is especially vulnerable to freeze damage if it is wet. But outdoor use will not be a problem if you remember to bring your Talavera table indoors or cover it in winter.
